Hon. Chemonges William Suffers Setback in NRM District League, Faces Pressure Ahead of 2026 Primaries

In a surprising political upset, incumbent Kween MP Hon. Chemonges William lost to businessman Mwashimwa in the recently concluded NRM District Mainstream League, raising questions about his prospects of retaining the party’s flag in the upcoming NRM parliamentary primaries.


The loss has sparked celebrations among his closest political rivals, particularly supporters of Chelegoi Motors, one of the strongest challengers expected to face off with Chemonges. However, William’s camp has downplayed the result, stating that the internal party league is “not the final voice of the people.”


“It’s too early to celebrate,” a spokesperson from Chemonges’ team told What’s Up Kapchorwa. “The NRM League result doesn’t decide for the majority of voters. We are focused on the real race and confident in our grassroots support.”


Despite the growing excitement around Mwashimwa’s win, the voting exercise was reportedly marred by high levels of voter bribery, according to sources and local observers. Several participants questioned the credibility of the process and expressed concerns over the integrity of internal party structures.


Political analysts say the defeat could signal growing dissatisfaction within party ranks, especially as competition intensifies ahead of the 2026 general elections.


As the dust settles, all eyes now turn to the NRM primaries, where the real battle for Kween’s parliamentary seat is expected to unfold. With political temperatures rising and alliances shifting rapidly, the race remains wide open.
