NRM Youth Chair Defects to NUP, Launches MP Bid for Soi County
KWEEN – May 27, 2025
In a dramatic political twist, Chemonges David, the serving NRM Youth Chairperson for Sebei Region, has officially crossed over to the National Unity Platform (NUP) and declared his bid to unseat the incumbent MP, Hon. Chemaswet Abdi Fadhil Kisos, in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Speaking to What's Up Kapchorwa, Chemonges cited "deep frustrations with the current leadership and government failures" as the main reasons behind his bold decision to switch parties.
“I am contesting because our people have suffered enough. Land grabbing is rampant in Soi. The killings by Karamojong rustlers continue. Our cattle are stolen with no compensation. We have no secondary schools, no proper health services, and the road network is in ruins. The youth have no opportunities under this NRM regime,” Chemonges stated passionately.
His move may come as a shock to many, especially given his current role as a top youth leader within the NRM structure. Chemonges emphasized that his decision was driven by conscience and the urgent need to respond to the suffering of the people in Soi County.
“My loyalty is to the people, not positions. That’s why I’ve joined NUP—to fight for justice, development, and dignity for our community,” he added.
With tensions already simmering in the region due to ongoing insecurity and social service gaps, Chemonges’ defection could signal a major shift in the political landscape of Soi County.
As the 2026 campaigns begin to take shape, all eyes will be on how this bold move reshapes alliances and voter sentiments in one of the most politically active counties in Sebei sub-region.
