NRM League Elections: Tingey Dominates, But Women's League Raises Eyebrows
Kapchorwa, Uganda – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) League elections in Kapchorwa District were marked by a sweeping victory for the Tingey constituency, securing all major positions, excluding the youth that was taken by the municipality. The elections were held at Kapchorwa Secondary School under tight police surveillance, highlighting the significance and tension surrounding the event.
While the Youth League election concluded smoothly with clear winners and high participation, the Women’s League election stirred controversy. Many of the key positions were uncontested, and candidates who ran unopposed were notably absent from the venue. This sparked frustration among several women delegates present, some of whom called for the elections to be annulled and fresh nominations opened. Their concerns centered on transparency and inclusivity within the electoral process.
The climax of the day came during the main league vote for a key leadership position. Alfred, a strong candidate who garnered 246 votes, was narrowly defeated by Labu Stephen, who secured 251 votes. Notably, Alfred had earlier gained the backing of Jimmy Kuka, a fellow aspirant who stepped down in solidarity.
Despite the controversies, the elections proceeded to conclusion. However, the heavy police presence and the dissatisfaction expressed during the Women’s League vote have left many in the community questioning the fairness and integrity of the process.
Residents and political observers in Kapchorwa are now calling on the NRM leadership to address the concerns raised and ensure more open and participatory processes in future internal elections.
